UNDERSTANDING THE NEW JERSEY CASE INFORMATION STATEMENT (CIS) IN DIVORCE CASES

  • November 26, 2024

In New Jersey divorce proceedings, the Case Information Statement (CIS) is a central and crucial document that provides a detailed snapshot of the financial situation of the parties.  Once a divorce complaint is filed, both parties must complete and submit the CIS to help the court understand key aspects of their finances. While completing the CIS can be time-consuming, it is essential to provide accurate and comprehensive information, as it will directly impact the outcome of your divorce and determine how the court will view your case. Below we will guide you through these key sections of the New Jersey link to sample form.

Part A: Basic Information

This section includes personal details like birthdates, marriage date, and a list of key issues in your case.

Parts B & C: Employment and Income

You will need to disclose income information for both spouses, including employer details, salary, bonuses, stock options, and any other earnings. Reference documents such as W-2s and pay stubs are required.

Part D: Monthly Expenses

This section outlines monthly expenses for shelter (mortgage/rent, utilities), transportation (car payments, gas, insurance), and personal expenses (groceries, medical, child care, etc.). This helps establish your standard of living, which impacts alimony and/or child support.

Part E: Assets and Liabilities

You must list all assets (bank accounts, real estate, pensions, etc.) and liabilities (mortgages, credit card debt, student loans). A detailed inventory of property, including cars and business interests, is also required.

Part F: Special Issues

If there are unique considerations in your case—such as the need for a forensic accountant or a special needs child—this section allows you to flag those issues.

Part G: Required Attachments

Documentation such as tax returns, pay stubs, and W-2 forms must be submitted along with the CIS.

Completing the New Jersey Case Information Statement accurately is essential for a smooth and effective divorce process. Reach out to the law firm of Porter Thomas Grabell & Baumwoll P.C., for further help with your divorce proceeding.
